The Most Popular Genres of All Time (independent research)
Source 1: http://www.the-numbers.com/market/genres
The Numbers, a website dedicated to providing data on film and business, gives a list of the top 15 genres from 1995-2016. It states that the most popular genre in terms of market share is Adventure, with second being Comedy and the third being Action. This is followed by Drama, Thriller/Suspense, Romantic Comedy or RomCom, Horror, Musical, Documentary, Black Comedy, Western, Concert/Performance, Multiple Genres, Reality and finally, Education. I find this quite surprising because in terms of general opinion, I thought horror would be higher than number seven on the list, considering the volume of these films released each year. However, as generic cycles develop, certain genres may become increasingly popular, such as the huge amount of superhero action films being made and released in the film industry today, which may influence market share in turn and the category of action and adventure.

This second source is from BFI, the British Film Institute. The data table below is for 2014, according to the gross box office for each genre. Although it is perhaps not as recent and therefore not as relevant, we can still observe a clear trend in the progression of popularity for these genres. Comedy remains high, as in this list it takes number 1. It is quite closely followed by Action, and then Animation.
Great prezi. Nice to have some data there to back it up.
